April Books (Delayed)

Well, all, here are the belated April books. There are only two. I blame NetFlix.

Daisy Kutter: The Last Train by Kazu Kibuishi: ***** (Five Stars.) This was a phenomenal graphic novel. The artwork is amazing. I could actually see the motion in some of the drawings, and some of the sketches are just hilarious. The storyline is all about this ex-outlaw who doesn't like the ex part of her new status. She has a complicated relationship with the sheriff in town, and when offered a chance to test a security system by robbing a train, she jumps at it. What happens next, you'll just have to read to see. Set in an old west/futuresque world with robots and cowboy boots, this graphic novel is my favorite read so far this year.

The Last Continent by Terry Pratchett: **** (Four Stars) This is one of my favorite Pratchett books of all time. When the wizards end up on XXXX (Four Ecks) (code for Australia) at the dawn of time, their housekeeper is instrumental in teaching the god in charge (who is an atheist, by the way) about sex. Meanwhile, somewhere in the future, Rincewind the Disc's worst wizard, has to figure out how to save the last continent from drying up completely. Mostly, I read about the wizards when I'm feeling particularly stressed out by work. Sometimes it's good to see academia from the outside in instead of the other way around. Especially when it's being satirized by someone as funny as Pratchett.

On the whole, two great reads. I'm not getting the volume that I used to, but I am enjoying the books. Feel free to share your own reads in the comments!

So I won't comment about the books that i started and didn't finish, except one: Mr Darcy Takes a Wife, by Bertolli. It was supposed to be a sequel to 'Pride and Prejudice', and granted that's a risky venture in any case, but there is no way this book should've ever been written. Seriously, I was 75 pages in and they had still only been married less than a week - but they'd had sex innumeral times. Seriously, it was just a glorified bodice ripper stealing better written characters. Boo!

Snow Flower & The Secret Fan by Lisa See. Book club, pretty decent read, sparked interesting conversation.

Silver's Edge & Silver's Bane by Anne Kelleher. They weren't that good, only sorta inventive with one dimesional (or less) characters and a lame ending. (I had to finish the story once I was halfway through though, but I didn't enjoy it!)

Kabul Beauty School by Deborah Rodriguez. Lo, get this book and read it - you'll love Deborah! It's non-fiction, about her time opening a Beauty School in Kabul Afganistan. It's great!

The Truth Teller's Tale by Sharon Shinn, juvi. It was ok, not brillant. Good comfort read for me.

So, on the whole it wasn't a great book month, but it was a fun one. I should pick up that Daisy Kutter book - it sounds interesting!!

ok, i'm totally making h pick up that graphic novel. :o) thanks for the recommendation.

i only read Snow Flower (see ten's comments) and a simple comic book called the Waking Dead... not so great... i link to it in my blog.

i blame lack of reading on too many things to do. plus, i'm still 300 pages from finishing the stupid john irving book. sigh. i need to NOT tackle 900 page books on a regular basis. and i need more audiobooks.
