So, I'm taking a poll, but I don't have the ambition to actually create a poll, so weigh in on the comments. Here's the question: Should a hypothetical person (hypothetically me) go to his/(more hypothetically likely)her hypothetical all-school reunion? Why or why not?
Here's my take: I don't know if I really want to go to an event soley devoted to hanging out with people I didn't really have much in common with then and certainly won't have much in common with now. I would frankly rather beat my head against the wall than go and make polite small talk with people I didn't particularly even like then when I was younger and less intelligent. "Oh, why Tiffany, how are you daarling? It's been simply ages. I just have to know: Are you still a ho? How is that working out for you?" "Oh, Laurel, it's simply divine, and are you still a complete geek? Because I've noticed you have a blog, and I think that does indeed make you a geek." To which we both laugh politely, "Ah ha ha ha." I'm a little of the persuasion that when you leave something, you leave it, and you don't look back. Also, it's on 4th of July weekend, when I would much rather be here watching cool fireworks in a public park at an undisclosed location.
There are, however, about four people that I really do want to see and will probably not see again unless I go to at least one of these reunion things. And I'm reasonably sure they will want to see me, too. I suppose if all else fails, I can always blow it off and leave.
My best friend from high school is flat out refusing to come, and I can't really blame her, but I feel an obligation for some reason. What do you all think? Have any of you been to your high school reunions? Do you think they're worth the effort? Are they just an excuse for the socialites of high school to get together and snub each other once again, or do they actually have some value in a person's growth process?
Posted by LoWriter at June 16, 2004 08:20 AMWell, you ARE the class valedictorian, right? BUT, its only a 5 year reunion, and you live rather far away from home. i dont think you will be scorned for not going. but you will have to wait another 5 years to see those good people again. unless you stage a sort of different reunion. do you even know if those people will be there? and c'mon, the Taste is on, and wow, who can say no to cheese curds! mmmm!!
Posted by: Dr. Gonzo at June 16, 2004 11:23 AMPersonally I want to go to my reunion, alas I do not believe we have had one yet. I just want to go to be like 'oh yeah, look how hot I am and how awesome I am, you all suck', and to see friends that I completely lost touch with because I graduated in 1998 and not everybody had email then... I've even attempted to look some of them up, but alas I do not want to pay for information and become a staulker.
What is this like a 6 year reunion? I thought our 5-year would have been last year? Is this another 'hick' thing? :-) (not as in you are a hick, but that they are)
Posted by: 10lees at June 16, 2004 12:59 PMWell, 10lees, I don't think it's a hick thing, but I could be wrong. It's an "all school reunion," which means that everybody who ever graduated from my high school floods into the town of Plummer, MN to celebrate. What we're celebrating, I'm not sure. Me, I think I'd like to celebrate the fact that I don't go to school there any more. Although, good point on the "I'm hot, you're not" revenge. That is an incentive.
Dr. Gonzo--You raise an interesting point: I was Valedictorian, and also I got some community scholarships. Plus, I was the class secretary. I was pretty much like I am right now: Overcommitted and way too involved in extra-curricular activities. ;) Also, there were only 17 people in my graduating class.

Posted by: Dr. Gonzo at June 16, 2004 05:14 PMI vote you go to the reunion. I went to mine last summer (10 year, yeah, I know, I'm old)...despite not really wanting to go, and it was great. If nothing else it's neat to see how people have changed and yet are the same. One guy I went to school with was the biggest jerk and totally full of himself, now he's the caring Dad playing and laughing with his 3 year old daughter. Of course there were the burn-out drunks in high school who are still burnout drunks. One guy was already married and divorced 3 times and plays in a heavy metal band! If nothing else, you'll have something great to blog about!
Posted by: TheNick at June 16, 2004 05:45 PMTheNick-- Yeah, you're probably right. (And it's been 6 years since I've been in H.S. You're not that much older.)
All right, party people. I think I'm probably going to go. You guys made good points about how people might have changed and it'll be good to see everybody even if they haven't. I mean, I know I've changed since high school. ;)
