Again, I Will Ask You This Once Again

My only question is as follows: Why isn't there cake on my desk right now?

Possible answers people have given me:
"Because it isn't your birthday."
"I don't know."
"I want cake, too, and I don't have any, either."
"LOL."
"Ooo cake!"
"I had cake yesterday."
"I don't really like cake." (Fascist)
"You know who has great cake?" (Followed by a description of said cake, which makes me want cake even more, in fact.) (I blame you, Jill. ;) )

Anyone else have any idea why there is no cake on my desk right now? And by right now, I mean moments before it would be heartily eaten and enjoyed by yours truly. (You should know that the cake of which I speak is a Princess Torte I saw at Dunn Bros. that I am covetting. It had a green shell of frosting and raspberry and custard layers. Yum. But at this point, I would even eat carrot cake, which I hate.)

Actually, I have one more question: Why isn't three paycheck month until March? Booo.

Possible answers people have given me to this question:
"You still have to work for the money, you know."
"My three paycheck month is in November. Ha!"
"I love three paycheck month. Best month ever."
"Why didn't you save your money instead of spending it?"
"What do you mean 'Three paycheck month'?"

My sister likes to tell me that it doesn't make any sense to get excited about three paycheck month because you don't actually get extra money. In her mind, you still have to work for the money; therefore, it is not extra money. I feel that this perfectly displays her lack of ever having to pay lots of real bills.

The beauty of three paycheck month is not that there is free money at the end of the magical paycheck rainbow. It is that there are three paychecks to pay the same number of bills rather than the two you get every other month. It's like Christmas except it comes twice a year. You just have an extra, undesignated paycheck sitting out there in the ether waiting to be spent or put into savings or put towards debts incurred in two paycheck months. It's beautiful. If you don't appreciate it, you clearly have too much money or too few bills or both.

So my demands are as follows: I want fancy cake and three paycheck month now. Not tomorrow. Not delayed delivery. NOW.

Can I get a hell yeah?

Hell Yeah!!

Not to brag or anything, but this month is my three paycheck month this year, woot! Then I have one in June and one in November. You may think I am obsessed with figuring this out, but the truth is I had to do the payday calendar cause I am HR.

Oh and anybody who doesn't appriciate three paycheck month can feel free to send me some of their extra funds.

I have also been asking myself over the past several days where the cake is. I will settle for some fudge. It's Christmas time people and just cause we can't say 'Christ' or 'Holi' at work, please bring me some freaking baked goods!

Yesterday was free baked goods day. Today was free pizza day. Tomorrow is day off day.(Jeff ducks for cover)

Lo and 10, you can at least take solace in the fact that there are 3 paid holidays in the next 20 days.

The "same number of bills" part is only true if the bills are monthly. Most of my bills are monthly, but vary based on the number of days, which is another case where they just end up being more anyways. It doesn't matter to me anyways though, since I just get paid monthly - which actually means the shorter months are better for me.

And Jeff - 3 paid holidays? How about 7 in the next week and a half? :)

And 10, you reminded me of a funny (but definitely not clean) rant called "No Christmas for you". I won't link it here since I don't know Lo's readership, but it's in my links section.

Yes Jeremy, but you are salaried so you get the same amount no matter what. You could take an extra long lunch and it wouldn't affect you (unless your boss is a dick or something). But for us hourly peons, we live for the hour and die by the hour, our bonus is they don't own our souls and they can't call us at midnight with problems.

10, Unless you're like me, in which case, everybody at work feels free to call you anytime they want. :) And for the record, I now hate you for having three pay check month right now. Oooo.

Jeff, you should duck for cover. Though I can't complain too much. Everybody went away and so for the first time ever, I got our usage data compiled and double checked without anyone hovering asking me unrelated questions.

Jeremy, I can see why three paycheck month would make no difference some now. I have to say that most of my bills do not depend on the number of days in the month. I think only my electric bill does that (and I love winter because my electric bill is like $16, although it's getting higher now that I'm home for more than two hours a day and using a laptop). You make a good point, though, so I can see how if you were paid monthly, it would make no difference. Especially if you were salaried. I remember being paid monthly. It blew, but that was probably because I was just starting out.

Monthly for hourly would be annoying if the hours varied (or overtime, which is why we almost switched to biweekly recently), but yea, being constant-pay it doesn't matter to me. It's funny since discussions come up because we get paid for December last week instead of at the end of the month (since it's holiday time until January now), and some people comment about it's hard they have to stretch it out until the end of January. I say I like it because the bills are roughly the same, so it just means the money sits in my bank account earning interest another 10 days. In any case, I could see when starting out while living month-to-month and spending based on account balance it could really suck though.

As for the work calling anytime thing, just because people call doesn't mean I have to do anything about it. The job description doesn't include being on call, and we've been told it's not required (except when we're specifically told otherwise). Or that anyone other than my boss (and boss's boss) or those who have non-work purposes for calling me gets to have my number.

Yeah, they get my number from my boss who encourages them to call me at home. For things like "How do I put paper in the printer?"

Posted by: Lo at December 24, 2006 01:50 PM

Ugh. That doesn't sound like a fun boss.

ok wanna hear something weird? they are changing back to a 2-week pay schedule for us peons. i had been on the nice, orderly 1st & 15th, which allowed for regular bill payment & savings. now i must go through the headache of re-figuring out everything. sigh. you'd think it wouldnt be that hard, but it is for me. i'm a stickler. and a bit of a scroogerly miser. happy holidays!

January is my three paycheck month. I am super-pumped. Three paychecks on a new year raise...could it get better?

Posted by: Danika at December 26, 2006 11:30 AM

Dr. G-- I am quite sorry! How sad for you. I hope the budgetting gets worked out soon.

Danika, that is indeed excellent! What a perfect time for three paycheck month. Mine are in March and October.
